Ballata del Pinelli

Pinelli's Ballad

That night it was hot in Milan,
It was so hot, so hot it was.
"Sergeant, please open that window."
Suddenly Pinelli fell down.

"Constable, I already told you,
I repeat that I am innocent:
Anarchy does not mean bombs,
But rather justice, love, freedom."

"No fuss, Pinelli, confess your guilt.
Your mate, Valpreda, already squealed,
He is the author of that bomb outrage
And we know you're his accessory."

"That's impossible," shouts Pinelli,
"A comrade cannot have done that
And the responsible for such a crime
Is to be found among the bosses."

"Pay attention, prisoner Pinelli,
There's a little bit too much smoke in here.
Go on this way, and we may need to air the room:
Four floors are a long way to go."

That night it was hot in Milan.
It was so hot, so hot it was.
"Sergeant, please open that window."
Suddenly Pinelli fell down.

They murdered him because he was a comrade,
It did not matter that he was innocent.
"He was an anarchist, and that is enough,"
Said cruel chief-constable Guida.

A coffin and three thousand comrades,
We were firmly grasping our flags.
That day we took the oath:
"This is not the end of this story."

Inspector Calabresi, constable Guida, you assassins,
You murdered one of our comrades
But you did not stop anarchy
And the people will win at last.

That night it was hot in Milan.
It was so hot, so hot it was.
"Sergeant, please open that window."
Suddenly Pinelli fell down.
