crass main

i crass, o meglio penny rimbaud, steve ignorant, eve libertine, joy de vivre, hari nana, phil free, pete wright, g. e. sus e mick duffield, sono riusciti a creare insieme una delle utopie possibili, e a mantenerla in vita per quasi otto anni, riuscendo a concentrare attorno al loro progetto una grande quantità di energie, amori ed attenzioni.
nel periodo dal 1977 al 1984 i crass sono stati la stella cometa del rock politico più estremo. difficili da costringere entro definizioni di "genere musicale" (è punk? è musica d'avanguardia? o, per dirla con loro, si tratta di "scrittori di canzoni d'amore"?), essi hanno sempre agito a sorpresa, al di sopra e al di fuori di qualsiasi schema concettuale preesistente, caratterizzando la loro attività, più che in senso strettamente musicale, in un più ampio senso culturale e politico, nuovo e rivoluzionario, anarchico e pacifista. infatti, oltre che nella plastica dei dischi e sui palchi dei concerti -trasformati costantemente in iniziative a beneficio di progetti a sfondo sociale ed antagonista- l'opera dei crass è dentro a numerosi libri, opuscoli e volantini, nelle manifestazioni di protesta spontanee e mai autorizzate, nell'occupazione abusiva degli spazi inutilizzati, nelle ingenue e clamorose imprese di sabotaggio tecnico ed intellettuale, nell'agitazione e nella protesta improvvisa ed improvvisata, incontrollata ed incontrollabile.

in queste pagine, servendomi di ritagli, appunti, ricordi, esperienze e contatti personali, ho cercato di raccontare una faccia della loro storia: troppo difficile per me, direi impossibile, poterle raccontare tutte. dagli esordi -il periodo è attorno all'agitato '77- all'orwelliano 1984, data "di scadenza" di un piccolo grande sogno che non è stato dimenticato, e tantomeno si è riusciti a "consumare".

crass, or better penny rimbaud, steve ignorant, eve libertine, joy de vivre, hari nana, phil free, pete wright, g. e. sus and mick duffield, succeeded in creating together one of the possible utopias and in keeping it alive for years, concentrating sincere love, spiritual energy and physical effort, extreme care and awareness around a common project. between 1977 and 1985 crass were a lighthouse in the anarchist culture throughout the world, and the comet star of the most extreme and uncompromising political music expression. yet they were hard to be filed in music departments under a label: were they punk rockers? did they play avantgarde or experimental music? or rather as they called themselves from some of their most inspired lyrics- were they just "writers of love songs"?
crass were not a common punk band, as music in itself was just one of their ways of communication. both as individuals and as a group they were the spark which gave new life and strenght to a complex international movement of libertarian inspiration. their social impact into the british society left a deep and unmistakeable mark, and soon their influence spread to the whole world flying high upon the wings of messages of revolution of the self. anarchy and peace co-existed in their own vision of the future.
crass' record releases were extremely political revolutionary events. the group released music, books and videotapes on their own eponymous company and distributed these releases using mostly non-commercial channels, privileging individual contact. their live concerts were mostly benefit initiatives in support of a wide variety of causes, the many coloured faces of the independent and alternative circuit network made of pacifist magazines and organizations, social centers and anti-militarist action groups, protest groups at military bases and nuclear plants and also the miners on strike.

the information featured in these pages tells just a tiny fragment of their story. it's too hard, impossible maybe, to put together all crass' multicoloured pieces from the beginning -circa 1977- to george orwells 1984, expiry date stamped on little big dream nobody could forget nor consume.
